Outcasted Comedy

LIVE at the Ant Hall for ONE-NIGHT ONLY!!

“Where are you from?” is a question that is incredibly annoying to many Americans – especially to this comedy trio. AK, Sabeen, and Sharup are Muslim-American comedians from three different immigrant backgrounds that will forever struggle with their own identity issues. Their renowned stand-up comedy delves into the hilarious journey to define their own unique American identity while feeling outcasted at times by the world around them.

Featuring:
Sharup Karim | www.sharupk.com
Sabeen Sadiq | www.sabeensadiq.com
AK Agunbiade | www.aktellsjokes.com

Sabeen Sadiq is a comedian and writer based in Chicago. Living in San Francisco for a brief period, she coproduced several shows and performed all over the Bay area at several popular venues including Cobbs Comedy Club and the San Jose Improv. She’s performed at the Muslim Funny Fest in NYC and at the San Francisco Desi Comedy Fest. Currently she co-produces the comedy show Don’t Kid Yourself and resides in Chicago performing stand-up all over the city. You can catch her at Laugh Factory, Zanies, and other popular venues.

AK Agunbiade is a comedian, storyteller, and writer that was born in the motherland, but grew up in the awe-inspiring cornfields of Indiana. His foray into comedy was accidental in nature. He told a funny story once on stage at a college comedy show and people laughed. The rest is history. You can usually find him performing at various venues in Chi-town and different colleges nationwide. When not performing, he is either sleeping, eating, or writing....But most likely he’s eating.

Sharup Karim is a South Asian American standup comedian who was born in a village in Bangladesh, but raised in Oklahoma City, OK. As a satirist of all topics ranging from being racially ambiguous to somehow surviving in America, Sharup's comedy primarily integrates his experiences as a western minority with observational humor and witticism. Sharup has performed at The Second City, Zanies, The Laugh Factory, The Lincoln Lodge, and has been featured at various comedy festivals, including LaughFest Grand Rapids, the Milwaukee Comedy Festival, the Flyover Comedy Festival in St. Louis, the Solocom Festival in New York City, and the world renowned Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland. Additional information can be found online at www.sharupk.com.

"Selling Your Voiceover" Workshop!

Selling Your Voiceover
38.00

November 3rd

1-4 pm

When it comes to voice over work, what is expected of male voices can often be quite different than what is expected of female voices. In this class, students will receive both perspectives from the husband and wife team of Jeff Priskorn and Jacquie Floyd. Jeff and Jacquie have been working in voice over for almost 2 decades. They will help you understand the difference among commercial, industrial, cartoon, and audiobook voice over work. You’ll learn how to climb inside the head of the client to interpret the copy in a way they desire and expect, giving you an inside track on booking jobs. You’ll get tips on setting up your own home studio, because, who wouldn’t want to make money in their jammies? And you will learn a bit about the business end of the industry, which honestly, is just as important as technique! Finally, you’ll learn about creating a demo reel and expanding your skills with one-on-one training – things you definitely need in order to land agency representation. Please bring something to take notes!

Two original one-act shows featuring the combined forces of Detroit comedy legends and up-and-coming local talent!

"Fish Dinner 4: Thanksgiving Feast"
Written by Quintin Hicks | Directed by Dave Davies
Stage Managed by Tommy LeRoy | Musical Director Mikey Brown

Starring Quintin Hicks

The Wilde-Award winning one-man show, "Fish Dinner" returns to Planet Ant Theatre for this fourth chapter: Fish Dinner 4: Thanksgiving Feast.

The Second City Detroit alum Quintin Hicks stretches the limits of character performance and improv to introduce you to a world of unique and unforgettable characters. Side-splittingly hysterical, with pockets of poignant tragedy, expect to see some familiar faces and perhaps a few new ones!

"The Quickening"
Written by Nick BoulahanisAdam Bacigal, & Mike McGettigan
Directed by Mike McGettigan | Stage Managed by Joey Morse

Starring Nick BoulahanisAdam Bacigal | Introducing Alex Raskov

The Planet Ant Colony Fest winners (improv troupe, Dinner at Eight) present an original one-act comedy, "The Quickening."

The story follows an underemployed, millennial lifeguard who’s been stuck living in his Dad's basement since graduating college. Max (Boulahanis), encouraged by his best friend (Bacigal), begrudgingly trades in his ideals for his very first corporate job at Quicken Loans. He quickly discovers that Quicken is home to an unsettling array of supernaturally identical coworkers. Max, attempts to not get fired, show his Dad (Raskovich) that he can hold down a “real” job, repair his friendship with his best friend, and retain his sanity.

November 9—24 | Planet Ant Black Box

Planet Ant Theatre's Double Feature Series presents

"Fish Dinner 4: Thanksgiving" + "The Quickening"

We know you have jokes and we want to help you tell them in front of a crowd!

High School students will spend the first hour of the workshop having 3 minutes each to tell some jokes then we will give feedback and work on some important writing skills to develop their individual voices. This is a great opportunity to work on being comfortable speaking in public and being an engaging entertainer! All instructors are working stand-up comedians with several years of touring, performing and writing experience who want to help bring a voice to young people!

Limited class size means lots of one on one feedback and personal instruction, it also means you should sign up before space runs out!

Workshop participants will have the option of joining a showcase of high school students to perform comedy at Ant Hall in the future!

Not In My House | Ant Hall

Not In My House | Ant Hall

Planet Ant Theatre is thrilled to join forces with Kristi Faulkner Dance for the first annual Live Out Fest, featuring the world premiere of "Not In My House" as part of a three-day festival celebrating LGBTQ+ identity & freedom. Kicking off on National Coming Out Day, Live Out Fest is a tribute to the healing, liberating, revolutionary power of art to the LGBTQ+ community. Live Out seeks to bring the local community together from all corners of metro Detroit to celebrate and connect with one another through our collective commitment to stand in truth and consciously live out our most beautiful, authentic, queer selves - expressed through the creation and integration of art in all its forms. The festival features dance, music, spoken-word poetry, performance art, comedy, burlesque, and more from local artists and creatives in the LGBTQ+ community.

The connecting thread throughout the three days of the festival will be a nightly performance of "Not In My House," a collaboration between Kristi Faulkner Dance and the Ruth Ellis Center to engage and inspire LGBTQ+ youth and the Detroit community through performance and storytelling. "Not in My House" references the protective structure of families, known as "houses" within the vogue community, which represent belonging, security, and often replace biological families who disown LGBTQ+ youth. It is within these chosen families that LGBTQ+ youth learn to navigate the challenges of living in a world that often judges, fears, hurts, and very often harms LGBTQ+ individuals simply because of who they are. "Not in My House" is built on the premise that by sharing our stories, we create a world in which identity and difference can unite, rather than divide. This multi-year collaboration has resulted in the creation of an original live performance blending the aesthetics of vogue and contemporary dance to explore LGBTQ identity and challenge gender norms though the creative re-imagining of our coming out stories. Comprised entirely of artists identifying as LGBTQ+, "Not in My House" radically shifts the narrative about LGBTQ+ identity by placing the power in the hands of those who can tell their own stories with authenticity. "Not in My House" seeks to inspire and empower LGBTQ+ youth to live their truth by providing representation of queer voices, specifically queer voices of color, in a society that often silences and marginalizes those voices.

"Not In My House" runs approximately 60 minutes and will perform Thursday and Friday at 8pm and Saturday at 9pm, with carefully curated programming leading up to and following each performance.

Sept. 28 — Oct. 13 | Planet Ant Black Box

HALF-OFF OPENING NIGHT + SUNDAY PERFORMANCE!

Planet Ant Theatre presents a reboot of its 2014 original one-act horror spoof, The Dogman Prophecies, with a new prequel, Dogman Rising, in a “Dogman Double Feature”:

Dogman Prophecies
written by Jon-Mathew Canniff, Jaclynn Cherry, Moni Jones, Clint Lohman & Jason Petterson | directed by Jaclynn Cherry

"The Dogman Prophecies" tells the story of Billy Becker and his quest to find the Michigan Dogman and… kill him. Billy blames the mythical half-man/half-dog for the murder of his boyhood pet. Along the way, however, Billy gets caught up in the mayhem of a military experiment gone awry, which threatens his quest for justice — and potentially the lives of every person on the planet.

Featuring: Jaclynn Cherry, Michael Duprey, Nate Hudson, Moni Jones, and Caitlin Shea.

// // // // //

Dogman Rising
written by Jason Petterson & Shawn Handlon | directed by Jason Petterson

"Dogman Rising" is an original one-act comedy inspired by and prequel to "The Dogman Prophecies." "Dogman Rising" follows the story of Rex Lewis, host of a small podcast that chronicles sightings of the Michigan Dogman. During one such podcast, a mysterious fan calls in with a tip that sends Rex on a journey across the midwest to learn the truth about the origin of the Dogman. The journey takes a dangerous turn when Rex encounters resistance from a group of zealots who do not want the truth about the Dogman revealed.

Featuring: Nick Crestwood, Will Curry, Halina Matt, Andi Maziarz, Jon Miller and Sarah Wilder.

Sept.
