Intro To Improv 1

Your improv education starts with Intro to Improv 1 where your seasoned instructor will create a safe and supportive environment, allowing you to learn the skills you’ll need to become a successful performer. You’ll be introduced to the fundamentals of improvised comedy and build your confidence through exercises focusing on listening, agreement, spontaneity, object work, and basic scene development.

This class is perfect for anyone from the experienced improviser looking to learn Planet ant's unique style to the complete novice looking to discover how improv can change their lives for the better when it comes to meeting new people, speaking in public, feeling more confident, and just having more fun!

Intro To Improv 2

In this class, you will hone the basic improv fundamentals that were introduced in Intro to Improv 1. You will continue to add new skills to your improv toolbox as you learn techniques for creating memorable characters and rich environments that will further flesh out your scenes.

Intro To Improv 3

In order to qualify for Intro 3, you must have completed our Intro 2 class within the last 6 months.

(Students will stay with the same group and be placed in the appropriate section based on which instructor they had the previous term.)

In the final level of our Intro program, you will continue to sharpen your improv skills as you use all the techniques taught in Intro 1 & 2 to begin creating fully fleshed-out scenes. You'll learn to make strong initiations and find the game of the scene while creating grounded, character-driven work. Students will also begin learning about the long-form improv format as their instructor introduces them to the Commando long-form style.

This session will conclude with a performance on Planet Ant's stage as part of our Student Showcase night.

Intermediate Improv 1

This six-week class builds on the fundamental concepts of improvisation with a focus on scene building, character, and relationships. Over the term, students will also be introduced to a variety of long-form styles. Intermediate Improv 1 is ideal for a wide range of improvisers, including those who've just mastered the basics in our Intro To Improv program all the way to seasoned performers seeking to fine-tune their abilities.

The session will end with a class show as part of one of our Student Showcase nights.

Intermediate Improv 2

In this class, you will continue your training and push your improv performance to the next level while building on the skills and concepts learned in Intermediate 1. Throughout the term, students will begin to explore more advanced improvisational topics such as character POV, genre, and time periods.

Intermediate Improv 3 will introduce new concepts and help you polish the skills you've learned thus far. Students will continue to explore scene work and long-form styles. Each class will hone in on a favorite form or experiment with creating a new form signature to their group. You'll also learn auditioning techniques in preparation for entry into our Advanced Program.

The session will end with a class show as part of one of our Student Showcase nights.

Advanced Improv 1

Advanced Improv 1 continues to build on all you've learned in our Intermediate program, but more critical feedback will push your improv and acting skills further than ever. Classes will focus on creating and maintaining realistic and meaningful connections that fuel strong scene work. Your class ensemble will also work to polish their live performances by working on stage presence, show pacing, and editing.

Advanced Improv 2

In order to qualify for Advanced  2, you must have completed our Advance 1 class within the last six months.

Advanced Improv 2 will build off of what you learned in the last class. This term will focus on advanced character work. Students will work on making unique and varied choices that push themselves and their scene partners out of their comfort zone and into more rewarding scene work.

Advanced Improv 3

Advanced Improv 3 will build off the previous two levels while further strengthening your class ensemble by working to exploit strengths and attack problem spots. This term will also touch on the basics of reimprovising scenes, improvising from beats, and writing through improv that will help prepare you for The Ant Process.

Sketch 1 - Intro to Comedy Writing

This series of classes will focus on writing comedic characters based on strong points of view. Students will learn how to use beats, how to edit, finding the game of the scene and will be exposed to multiple styles. Classes will begin with students writing single characters monologues and end by writing sketches with multiple characters.  By the end of the six-week session, students will have finished a minimum of 3 comedic monologues and 2 sketches.

Sketch 2 - The Mechanics of Sketch Writing

In The Mechanics of Sketch Writing, students will learn to deepen their understanding of the tools that can be utilized to create well-written sketch comedy. Students will employ multiple sources for inspiration, from real world events to personal stories, and learn how to turn any idea into a fully realized comedy sketch. By the end of the course, students will have finished a minimum of 5 sketches.

Students should have one 3-5 page sketch written specifically for week 1 of the course.

Sketch 3 - Further Exploration of Sketch

In order to qualify for Sketch Writing 3, you must have completed our Sketch Writing 2 class within the last six months. Email classes@planetant.com with any questions you may have.

The class will use scripts and videos from famous comedy shows as examples on how to write comedy in multiple styles, focusing on comedy for the stage. Students will learn to write in and identify styles such as farce, parody, screwball, dark humor, satire, blue, surreal and more. By the end of the course, students will have finished a minimum of 6 sketches.

Students should have one 3-5 page sketch written specifically for week 1 of the course.

Sketch 4 - Advanced Sketch Writing

In order to qualify for Sketch Writing 4, you must have completed our Sketch Writing 3 class within the last six months.

Next 6-week session TBD

This session takes students further into comedy writing by finding and fostering each student's personal style.  The class will also teach writing cooperatively and how to generate and coauthor material using the techniques of improv.  By the end of the course, students will have coauthored or authored a minimum of 10 sketches.

Students should have one 3-5 page sketch written specifically for week 1 of the course.

Sketch 5 - Putting Up the Show

NOT OFFERED THIS TERM

In order to qualify for Sketch Writing 5, you must have completed our Sketch Writing 4 class within the last six months.

Next 6-week session TBD

Our entire sketch program culminates in this exciting series of classes were students will work with their instructor/director to further refine their sketches into a complete show that will be cast and performed on the Planet Ant stage. 

Participants will not only receive additional writing experience as they refine and rewrite their sketches in preparation for their final show, but they will also gain insight into many of the factors that come into putting up a successful sketch review, like the casting and directing process. 

Final show dates are TBD.

Acting for the Improviser

NOT OFFERED THIS TERM

Eligible students must have completed Planet Ant's Intermediate 2 class. Other students should email us to see if they qualify.

Acting for the Improviser allows students to take what they have learned through their improv training to help bridge the gap between improvising and working with scripted material.

Taught by York Griffith, former Planet Ant Artistic Director and the director of this season's production of The Aliens, this class will be filled with short discussion, scene work and exercises specific to the script and where the actor is at in their process.
