This course is a culmination of the skills you have developed through the Planet Ant Training Center (or other training center program) experience. Over the eight-week course, participants will work with Detroit Improv institution Quintin Hicks to develop a unique improvised show form, and then debut the finished product for a six-week run during the Comedy Slice Block Party show on Thursday nights at Ant Hall. 

The show will take whatever form you, as a group along with Hicks as director, want it to take. During the last two weeks of class, you will perform "preview" shows during the Comedy Slice Block Party show to tweak and perfect the show before its official debut the week after the course ends. 

In order to qualify for the Masters program, you must have graduated from our training center, or another improv program offered at another theater. You must also participate in an improv audition.

Sketch 1 - Intro to Comedy Writing

The class will use scripts and videos from famous comedy shows as examples on how to write comedy in multiple styles, focusing on comedy for the stage. Our entire sketch program culminates in this exciting series of classes were students will work with their instructor/director to further refine their sketches into a complete show that will be cast and performed on the Planet Ant stage.

Sketch To Video 1 - Writing and the Language of Film

Level 1 - Writing and the Language of Film

In this course, students will learn the basics of sketch video production. Students will be taught how to write scripts for video, learn the basic types of shots, learn storyboarding, shot composition and get a grip on all the basics needed to turn your ideas into a filmed sketch. By the end of this course, students will have at least six scripts that will be ready to shoot.

Required Equipment: A cell phone with the ability to take pictures.

Sketch To Video 2 - Filming

In this course, students will be tasked with shooting very simple (two minute) comedy sketches each week of class. All video will be shot and edited “on the fly,” with an emphasis on making the process of filming as painless and efficient as possible. Class time will consist of analysis, dissection and critique of projects, with some filming drills and practice along with further instruction in pre production. By the end of this level, students will have six simple sketches recorded.

Required Equipment: A cell phone that is able to capture video OR a video camera that you have a working knowledge of.  NOTE:  No instruction will be given on any particular cameras. Students should come ready to shoot.

Sketch To Video 3 - Editing

Students will be introduced to video editing concepts and techniques. Short videos will still be shot on a weekly basis but will now have the ability to be edited.  Students will be taught the editing skills needed to turn their short sketch ideas and scripts into quality shorts that have a good comedic flow. An emphasis will be placed on streamlining production and using editing to help the entire sketch shooting process become more efficient.  

Required Equipment: Access to a computer that runs basic editing software.  Any video editing software is acceptable.

Sketch To Video 4 - Sound & Light

Lighting and sound will be introduced as concepts to make your video look as professional as possible. Proper techniques for capturing high quality audio and well-lit sets will propel your sketches to the next level. Learning these basic techniques with hands on experience in class will allow the students weekly filmed sketches excel in quality.

Recommended equipment:  Cheap clip on lights, diffusion fabric, light bounce board and portable audio recording device.

Note: Most portable recording devices will be fine for this class, if a device is out of your price range anything that records audio can be used in order to learn technique.  Boom mic and recording techniques will be taught but a boom mic or recording device is not required.
